UCSF Strategic Plan

Chancellor’s Message

Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, June 2007 email to the UCSF community.

Two years ago, I commissioned an initiative to engage the entire UCSF community in the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan for the campus. Today, I am pleased to announce the completion of that monumental undertaking and the publication of “Advancing Health worldwide: A Strategic Plan for UCSF.” Under the exemplary leadership of the Strategic Planning Board, a plan has been developed that will underpin what we hope to accomplish in the years to come. The plan itself is a milestone for our institution. Less visible, but just as significant, is the inclusive process that gave shape to it. Every substantial UCSF constituency, both internal and external, was consulted, and in the spirit that distinguishes UCSF, every group provided unstinting support. I want to thank the many dedicated individuals who participated. I am grateful for their time, for the intellectual energy they committed, and for the collaborative spirit they engendered. I also wish to acknowledge with great appreciation the leadership of Professor Elizabeth Blackburn and Executive Vice Chancellor/Provost Eugene Washington, who served as Co-Chairs of the Strategic Planning Board. Much work lies ahead. The new Strategic Plan for UCSF marks the end of one phase and the beginning of another in our ongoing endeavor to advance health worldwide. You will hear more in the coming months about steps being taken to implement the priorities established by the plan. I ask for your continued participation in the efforts to realize our goals. Sincerely, J. Michael Bishop, M.D.
